Restoration of the Hall, around 1925
Merchant Adventurers' Hall
There is always something to be done to preserve the Hall. Everywhere needs to be kept clean and tidy, the silver must be polished, and the furniture, paintings and archives looked after.
Preservation work has been going on for centuries. From 1432 onwards there are records in the accounts of repairs. In 1571 money was spent on panelling the walls and building the chimney and fireplace in the Undercroft. At this time it is also possible that the Hall was divided into smaller rooms, with plaster ceilings put into the open roofs.
