'Creation', York Mystery Plays 2006
Dr John Kinnell
In medieval times mystery plays were an important part of English culture. They were performed in many cities and towns including Chester and Wakefield.
The York mystery plays were performed annually from the 14th to the 16th centuries – that’s nearly two hundred years! The plays were written around 1350 in local Yorkshire dialect. No one knows who the author of the plays was, but it is likely that it was more than one person. The York mystery plays tell the stories of Creation through to The Last Judgement.
