Over the centuries the Chapel has changed along with changing religious beliefs. Very big changes came with the Reformation. In the 1530s King Henry VIII had a disagreement with the Pope and made himself head of the church in England. His son, Edward VI, made major changes to the way religion was practiced in England. This included alterations to the way that churches looked; in particular they became much plainer.

The Chapel’s current appearance has remained the same, except for a few changes, since 1660 when Charles II was King.
