The Chapel, Merchant Adventurers' Hall
Nikki Bowling
Like other medieval guilds, the Merchant Adventurers were not just a business organisation, but also a religious and charitable one. This made it important that they had a chapel where they could celebrate their religious beliefs.
The Chapel that is here today is not the original Chapel of the Hall. It was built in 1411, 50 years after the Hall was built, and it replaced an earlier chapel. Accounts in the Company archives say that the old chapel was in very bad condition, describing it as ‘ruinous’, which is why it was rebuilt.
