Merchants shaking hands on a deal
Jim Poyner 2006
The Great Hall has been the business centre of the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall for 650 years. Over the centuries it has seen hundreds of business deals, disputes and meetings, and it is still used today.
When the Company was very powerful, trading overseas and controlling the goods coming into York, members would have met at the Hall to arrange business deals. For example, two or more of them would hire a boat to take their goods to Europe, which would be cheaper than if each of the members hired a separate boat.
