Business and trade were vital to the lives of the Merchant Adventurers. They were free to risk, or ‘adventure’ their money wherever they wished – which is where the name comes from.
Many were involved in trade overseas, buying goods and selling them on, hopefully at a profit.
By belonging to the Company of Merchant Adventurers, members could help to protect each other’s interests and control trade.
