The Coat of Arms of the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York
Merchant Adventurers' Hall
The motto, or slogan, of the Merchant Adventurers also gives us an idea of what they did. You can see the motto underneath the Coat of Arms, which is displayed in the Great Hall.
It means ‘May God prosper our affairs’ and shows that the bearers of this Coat of Arms were involved in business, asking God for wealth from their business deals. The motto also reveals the importance of religion for the Merchant Adventurers.
The other parts of the Coat of Arms also tell us about the Merchant Adventurers because the winged horse (Pegasus) and wavy lines (the sea) represent travel.
